THE

Introduction.

Bonuses have many purposes, ranging from motivating an employee to achieve particular goals (financial or otherwise) to encouraging staff loyalty. Either way, the employee stands to gain for doing something that will benefit his or her employer. It is therefore surprising that a number of cases have come before the Courts in recent years concerning circumstances where an employer could be said to have abused a bonus scheme, seeking to take the benefit from the employee
without making a proper or any bonus payment. Employers sometimes try to hide behind a discretion whether or not to pay a bonus, stating that this discretion justifies non payment even where an employee can fairly be said to have kept their side of the bargain by hitting
targets or remaining loyal. These cases have seen the Courts lay down guidelines, establishing that just because an employer has a discretion over a bonus payment does not mean
that the exercise of that discretion is unfettered.

General Principle.

In 2004 the case of Cantor Fitzgerald International v Horkulak established that any decision to award a bonus must be rational and in good faith. If must not be arbitrary and irrational.

Practical Application.

In practice this means that a court will look at the contract in question and how the contract is operated to decide if an employer has acted rationally and in good faith. This can sometimes lead to surprising results. In Clark v Nomura, a bonus scheme was described as discretionary, not
guaranteed, and dependant on individual performance. The Court, however, decided that it was too rigid for the employer to base its decision on individual performance, as this would prevent the employer from relying on other legitimate factors. This is an employee friendly decision where the court appears to have taken the view that as the employee deserved a payment it was not going to let the employer hide behind its discretion to avoid a payment where it was
irrational in the circumstances to do so. The courts, however, are not always employee friendly.
In Midland Bank v McCann, the Court decided that it was permissible (albeit hardhearted) for an employer to refuse a bonus to an employee about to be made redundant, where the express purpose of the bonus was to attract, motivate and retain employees. It was obvious that paying the bonus to this soon to be redundant employee would not meet any of the bonus scheme’s
purposes.

Amount to Be Paid

Where the amount due is discretionary and not referable to a specific formula, the case of Taylor v Motability Finance Ltd. decided that the test of how much should be paid was not what a reasonable employer would pay, but what the particular employer in question should have paid with reference to contractual terms and, depending on the circumstances, what other similar employees had received.

Equal Treatment

Quiet apart from any rules outlawing discrimination and requiring equal pay, the Courts have decided that employees must be treated even handedly in relation to bonuses. This does not necessarily mean that employees must be treated the same (although if they are not there could be discrimination and equal pay issues), but any different treatment must not be capricious.

Dismissing to Avoid Payment and Co-operation

A recent case (Takacs v Barclays Services Jersey Limited) has suggested that an employer cannot dismiss an employee if the reason for the dismissal is to avoid its obligations to pay a bonus, and that an employer may be under a duty to co-operate with an employee in achievement of sales targets. Although the court in question has not finally decided on the points, it has said that they are good arguments.

What Can An Employee Do?

If an employee is upset with a bonus decision, they should generally follow the employer’s grievance procedure.
If an employee also feels that he/she has been discriminated against, they should also follow the Statutory Questionnaire Procedure.
www.canarywharfjobs.com

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://canarywharfjobsblog.blogspot.com/2008/01/bonus-payments-limitations-on-employers.html' title='BONUS PAYMENTS – LIMITATIONS ON AN EMPLOYER’S POWER. Almost nothing has been written about the eye-watering bonuses being handed out to workers in the City, as London’s financial district is known.

There is a simple reason for that. Bonuses, by recent standards, are likely to be very modest this year. The days of the mega-bonus may be gone for a long time to come.

The credit crunch isn’t a disaster for the global economy, but for one small section of it: people who work in the upper echelons of the money markets, creating, selling or trading exotic financial products.

Since they are the people who collect the big bonuses, it isn’t hard to conclude that the outlook for next year is wintry. The 2007 bonus season may still be a good one for a few bankers.

Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc has said its bonus pool for staff rose 10 percent this year. The bank will pay about $5.7 billion in bonuses compared with $5.2 billion in 2006. Likewise, Goldman Sachs Group Inc staffers look set to enjoy yet another good year.

The New York-based investment bank had set aside $16.9 billion to pay salaries, benefits and bonuses in the first nine months of 2007, even more than its 2006 full-year record, according to the company’s third-quarter earnings report.

Elsewhere the picture will be more mixed. The London-based Centre for Economic and Business Research says City bonuses may drop 16 per cent next year. The UK recruitment firm Armstrong International estimates a 2007 bonus decline of as much as 20 per cent in London compared with the 2006 payouts.

And some people may just feel too embarrassed to collect anything at all, given the kind of setbacks their banks have suffered. Marcel Ospel, the chairman of UBS AG, said this month that he didn’t “expect or want” a bonus for 2007.

When you have just written off $10 billion for losses on subprime investments, it is probably understandable. Plenty of other senior bankers may be struck by similar pangs of guilt over picking up anything more than their base salary.

One year of reduced bonuses wouldn’t matter very much. Nobody ever claimed that finance was steady work. There are good and bad years, and everyone accepts that. The issue is what happens when you look forward. Is this just a dip? Or is it a turning point?

Already, the market for luxury goods indicates that a turning point has been reached. The prices of London luxury homes have stalled, according to Knight Frank LLC. It expects only modest increases next year as bonus payments dwindle. Likewise, decent wine. According to the Liv-ex.com index, prices of the best wine, which have more than doubled in the past two years, are starting to fall.

The message? The big bonuses won’t be back any time soon. There are three reasons for that.

One, innovation is about to dry up. The big money in finance has been made in devising new and exotic financial instruments.

Slicing and dicing different kinds of bonds, and repackaging them in novel ways gave banks huge profits in the past five years. The credit crunch has killed that market stone dead.

Bloomberg / Mumbai December 20, 2007

www.canarywharfjobs.com

Canarywharfjobs.com goes from strength to strength

CanaryWharfJobs.com has received an astonishing response from both clients and jobseekers since the site was re-launched last month. With vastly improved looks and functionality, it has certainly enhanced its reputation as canary wharf’s most successful on-line jobs board!

One of their clients, William Murday, a Senior Consultant at global executive search firm, NJF Search International commented:

“I have been using the CanarywharfjJobs.com website for the last 12 months and within that time I have made 16 placements from candidates I received through the site. But I just wanted to let you know that the quality of the applicants in the last month or so has been exceptional. It has now become the most successful jobs board I use! So thank you and keep up the good work!”

But it is not all down to the techies that canarywharfjobs.com is doing so well! A vibrant new Account Manager has also been getting rave reviews!

Natalie Adams (pictured left) joined the company a little over four months ago and it was her drive and innovative approach to all things online that resulted in the overhaul of the entire Canarywharfjobs.com site. Indeed, George Calderbank, Director of Canarywharfjobs.com said: “We are lucky to have found Natalie and we are delighted she has joined our team. She has brought a fresh approach to the company and has some truly excellent ideas. She really wants to help clients attract the right kind of candidates and has some extremely clever and novel ways of attracting candidates to our site that other job boards cannot reach!”

Canarywharfjobs.com has come a long way since it was launched back in early part of 2005. It is now firmly established as the number one jobs board for the canary wharf district and is now a real alternative to larger and much more expensive competitors! I have included some of the major points below.

If you have an investment portfolio which holds only big name UK stocks...
...and you've just come back from a seven-week holiday free from TV, newspapers and mobile phones...
...you could be forgiven for wondering what all the fuss has been about.
Particularly if you don't own any shares in banks or pub owners.
Because since reaching the dizzy heights of 6,717 on 13 July, the FTSE 100 share index is down...yes, all of 5%!
No big deal, and hardly justifying all the hysteria that continues to consume so many column inches.
Yet over in the debt markets it's all been very different.
Huge losses have been incurred. US mortgage lenders have gone bust. Hedge funds have been wiped out. And the ‘toxic waste' has spread well beyond the shores of the North American mainland. Emergency funding has had to be hastily arranged to re-finance banks as far away as Germany.
Estimates of repackaged American home loans bought by banks in the States, Europe and Asia range up to an unhealthy £250bn.
Bankers around the world have now got the jitters. They are trying to work out who is, and is not, safe to lend to, poring over their own balance sheets to guesstimate how many of the loans that they thought were OK...have gone bad.
And all the while the credit-rating agencies have been well ‘behind the curve', still assigning high credit ratings to what has proved to be very dodgy debt.
There have been dire warnings from bond watchers that up to 5,000 jobs could be axed in the City and Canary Wharf as a result of the turmoil. Some forecasters see as many as a third of investment bankers involved in the creation and selling of so-called ‘asset-backed securities' facing the axe.
You've probably worked out by now that the term ‘asset-backed security' has in many cases turned out to be a complete misnomer. The assets haven't proved to be worth anything like as much as, or indeed as secure as, the builders of these financial houses of cards liked to think they would be.
At the very least, the big bonanzas of yesteryear are firmly off the agenda.
Last week we heard that financial-sector bonuses added up to a staggering £14bn in the past twelve months. It could be some time before that sort of figure is seen again.

Is this really going to hit London share prices?

Answer: yes it is. Not necessarily now, but more likely gradually, over time.
Because British companies will find it harder to borrow money at the rates they want. Private-equity managers will be unable to raise cash for 'leveraged' buyouts, i.e. taking over other businesses on borrowed money. So the takeover train that has driven up stock prices for so long will hit the buffers.
And the overall effect of the credit crunch will be to slow down economic growth, so that both company sales and profits will be hurt. City bonuses will be slashed too, meaning that less cash will be sloshing around.
But the stock market may well not suffer another period like the last seven weeks. This time it could be different.
I can see shares just drifting down as the bad news keeps on biting...

>> What do you think? Agree with David? With Evaluations underway at many of the Investment Banks, the news is a little worrying for many working in London's Financial Institutions.

LONDON, Aug 30 (Reuters) - Only six weeks ago London's financial hub seemed headed for another round of hefty bonus payouts from a bumper first half of transactions. But a global financial downturn has dampened the mood.
Bankers and traders who splurge on fast cars, vacation homes and luxury yachts with the extra cash each year may be forced to scale back their spending plans as the U.S. subprime turmoil and credit squeeze have brought dealflow to a grinding halt.
About 4,200 bankers in the City of London pocketed bonuses of more than 1 million pounds ($2 million) each in the latest bonus season, according to an estimate from Britain's Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR).

But payouts could tumble by as much as a quarter this time around, said Jonathan Said, a senior economist at the centre.
The forecast is a U-turn from the centre's earlier prediction that this year's City bonuses would top last year's record high pool of around 8.8 billion pounds ($17.7 billion), which itself was an increase of 18.3 percent on 2005.
Since then, a sharp rise in defaults in the U.S. subprime mortgage market -- which caters to borrowers with poor credit histories -- set off global market volatility and deeply dented revenues of some of the world's biggest banks.
"Banks are having significant increases in their costs. They can't access liquidity as cheaply as before," Said said. "The first costs that you take off are bonuses."
www.canarywharfjobs.com

CanaryWharfJobs Upgrade- Improving User Experience

CanaryWharfJobs.com, a niche jobs board servicing Canary Wharf and London, announces the launch of its upgraded site (www.canarywharfjobs.com). After a series of management changes announced yesterday, no other Wall Street firm will have repositioned as many top dogs to the British capital. This is the clearest reflection yet that the growth in the investment-banking business won't be coming from the U.S.
Indeed, once Walid Chammah moves to London, Morgan Stanley's Canary Wharf offices will house its most senior investment banker, its global head of mergers and acquisitions, the chief operating officer of its securities division, and its global head of capital markets. Other firms have repositioned senior managers to London: Goldman Sachs Group earlier this year located its operating chief there.
The reasons are many. First and foremost is London's geography. By straddling the time zones of Asia and North America, a globally focused executive can wake up speaking with colleagues in Tokyo and spend the Jaguar ride home directing charges in New York. London is also more conveniently situated than New York for courting executives in Russia, China, the Middle East and India -- the four horsemen of industry growth.
This understandably creates anxiety in Congress or Mike Bloomberg's City Hall; think of all the tax revenue lost when big earners move. But the bigger picture is still a healthy one for American finance. While their employees may move from Murray Hill to Mayfair and speak accented English, U.S. investment banks still are leading the charge in capital markets.
www.canarywharfjobs.com

Citigroup building Sold in 50:50 Joint Venture

The sale of the 42-storey tower in Canary Wharf by Royal Bank of Scotland marks the UK's second-largest property deal ever - ranking just behind the £1.09bn sale in April of HSBC's headquarters in the same area.

The Citigroup building at 25 Canada Square is being bought as a 50:50 joint venture between Quinlan, acting in a personal capacity, and Propinvest.

It is understood that the deal amounted to a total of €100m. Lloyd-Hilbert, sent a worse CV, and even added a year to his age.
He had a "positive response" by email within two hours, he told an employment tribunal.
Yet two days earlier the same giant multinational had told him there were no vacancies even though he knew there were.
Now Mr Malik is claiming racial discrimination against engineering firm Amec Utilities. The father-of-four was born in Pakistan but has lived here since he was five. He is a qualified civil engineer with 25 years' experience.
Mr Malik works in Canary Wharf, East London, but wanted to return to Wales where his family live.
He told the tribunal in Cardiff he applied to Amec's office in Treforest, Glamorgan, after they told him on the phone they had vacancies. Two days later they wrote back saying there were no jobs available.
He said: "I decided to put them to the test and dreamed up the name Lloyd-Hilbert to see if he would be luckier."
After the interview offer "I had to be sure a vacancy hadn't suddenly cropped up so I applied again under my real name - and once again I was turned down". He added: "It seems they didn't want to know me under my real name because it sounded foreign.
"I believed these things were going on when I was a young man looking for work almost 30 years ago but I didn't believe it was still going on today.
"I'm not looking for compensation, I just want to stop this discrimination happening."
Amec denied discrimination but the tribunal said there was a case to answer and adjourned the hearing.
The building and utilities firm employs 20,000 worldwide - 12,000 in Britain. Chief executive Samir Brikho is a Lebanon born Swedish citizen.
A spokesman said later: "We vigorously deny discrimination. We have a very proactive equal opportunities policy."
www.canarywharfjobs.com

HSBC to halve 8,000 staff at Canary Wharf

I recently came across this article in the Guardian Unlimited re: HSBC's plans to relocate half of its staff away from the Canary Wharf Headquarters.
>>

HSBC is planning to halve the 8,000 staff at its landmark Canary Wharf headquarters as it looks to free up space to sublet to other tenants.
Michael Geoghegan, chief executive of Britain's biggest bank, told a conference today he had set staff a challenge to reduce the workforce in Britain's most expensive office block by 50% over the next seven years.
"I don't think I need 8,000 people coming into Canary Wharf every day," he said.
"I've challenged staff in seven years to have 50% of that building empty, sublet to somebody else."
He added: "I don't think we're a really progressive, perceptive company if 8,000 people have to get up at some unearthly hour to come into the office and go again. Technology should change our thought processes."
The 210m-high Canary Wharf building has transformed not only London's skyline but also its property market.
The building was sold in April for a record £1.1bn to Spanish property family, the Sanahujas. It cost HSBC just under half that to build.
Mr Geoghegan was not thought to be trying to indicate that HSBC was planning large scale redundancies but to use technology to allow people to work in different locations or more flexibly.
The bank has set up a committee to look at ways to achieve the seven-year goal set by Mr Geoghegan, who has just completed his first year as chief executive of the bank.
He has endured a difficult first 12 months, overseeing the bank's first ever profits warning on the back of problems in the US with lending to customers with poor credit records.
The tower in Canary Wharf is not only where the central functions are based, such as human resources and executive management, but also the operations for the UK banking business and the investment bank.
In the conference speech he acknowledged the pressure that some companies are facing from activist investors to break themselves up.
"This is a big organisation and many people say in this fashionable world of breaking up companies - would it be better to be broken out and delivered separately?" he said.
But he said the bank's advantage was its global scale, network and distribution, and he aimed to "join up the bank, getting critical mass, and making sure the sum of the parts really reflect the value of this group".
HSBC shares have been among the worse performers of the banking sector but have recently been snapped by investors in the Gulf looking for value in the shares.
A fund backed by the government of the United Arab Emirates - the investment arm of Dubai Investment Capital (DIC) - has taken a £500m stake in HSBC while Saudi billionaire Maan al-Sanea has shelled out £3bn on a 3% stake in the bank.
Other head office jobs of banks based in Canary Wharf are also under review.
Barclays, which has a headquarters close to HSBC, has warned that 23,600 roles will be lost as a result of its proposed takeover of Dutch bank ABN Amro which would have a combined workforce of 216,000.
It is not clear how many will be lost from the Barclays head office but the combined bank, if it is created, will be based in Amsterdam.
The former chairman of Barclays, Matt Barrett, today told a separate conference that European banks can merge with each other or be "picked off" by larger US rivals.
"There will be consolidation in Europe," Mr Barrett was quoted by Bloomberg as saying. "If not, you'll have the barbarians at the gate" and the "Europeans will get picked off by the surging behemoths from the US", he said.
"There's potential for four or five major globally competitive banks to emerge from Europe," he said.
www.canarywharfjobs.com

Hours worked per day in a London Hedge Fund

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5075946329059848578" style="FLOAT: right; Last week's episode showed presenters on a home shopping channel wearing Remembrance Sunday poppies while Katie and Paul got into trouble trying to sell food to Muslims during Ramadan, which ended in October.
3 THE shots of candidates walking to their taxis after being fired were all shot on the same day early on in filming.
4 TO get round the fact that contestants may be wearing different clothes when they are fired, they're told to wear tightly-buttoned coats - whatever the weather. Eagle-eyed viewers last week may have spotted that Katie quit while in a black suit but had a white suit under her coat when she got into the cab.
5 THE post-firing taxi ride takes the candidate around the block to allow their interview to be filmed. They are then taken to a hotel to stay the night and finally leave the next day.
6 DESPITE the frequent shots of the gleaming towers of Canary Wharf, Sir Alan doesn't have an office in London's Docklands or the City. Amstrad's head office is in Brentwood, Essex. He has a base in Mile End Road, an office in St James, and Viglen - where last Wednesday's interviews were conducted - is based in Wembley.
7 THE boardroom is in fact in a TV studio in West London.
8 DURING the boardroom scene at the end of each show, Sir Alan's chair is bolted on to a wooden box to make him sit taller than advisers Margaret and Nick.
9 DIVORCEE Margaret Mountford, 55, is a retired lawyer who worked with Sir Alan and later joined the board of Amstrad. She is now doing a PhD in papyrology, the study of ancient literature.
10 SIR Alan's sidekick Nick Hewer, 63, was his long-term PR man but now lives in semi-retirement in rural France. He has a passion for vintage tractors.
11 BOARDROOM receptionist Frances is an actress, not Sir Alan's real secretary. He calls her Frances as that's the name of his real PA.
12 THE £4million house where the candidates stayed is now available to rent. The seven-bedroom property in Notting Hill, West London, is yours for £5,750 a week.
13 THE 16 candidates had to share just one TV while staying in The Apprentice house.
14 FOOTBALL fanatic Tre often hid the TV remote control in his pocket so he could watch Match Of The Day in peace.
15 EACH candidate had their own chaperone to watch their every move inside the house.
16 ALTHOUGH the candidates were told they had to wake up early, none of them were allowed alarm clocks to increase the pressure.
17 DURING the show, three of the house's bathrooms were off limits to contestants. Gerri Blackwood said: "I am not sure whether it was deliberate or not but you can imagine they must have wanted us to share showers."
18 TRE (below) managed to talk Ghazal Asif into cooking his meals each night in the house, while Naomi Lay made his breakfast and Katie Hopkins ironed his shirts.
19 TRE used to call the girls in the house "babydoll" and the men "princess".
20 HE'S been married for seven years, but Tre doesn't wear a wedding ring, feeling it may put off women he's doing business with.
21 WHILE Sir Alan owns the yacht featured in the opening credits, the helicopter isn't his - it is actually chartered from the firm Rotor Motion.
22 THE show's title music is from Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet.
23 AS a child, Naomi showed her early entrepreneurial skills by charging her parents to remove caterpillars from their gooseberry bushes.
24 TRE'S wife Sam is expecting their second child in August. The company is increasing the degree of automation for cheque processing. Nationwide, the UK's biggest building society, anticipates about 900 jobs will go following its merger with smaller rival Portman this summer.Separately, jobs are expected to go if Barclays' takeover bid for ABN Amro is successful. A rival bid by a consortium led by Royal Bank of Scotland would also affect jobs. Citigroup has also said it is looking to cut jobs, with Canary Wharf almost certain to suffer (Recruiter, 18 April).

But the general view is that such evidence does not amount to any cause for alarm in the banking sector. There is much more information available about investment banking jobs than those in the retail sector. This is perhaps due to investment banking jobs paying more, thus headhunters and agencies are more likely to be involved. However, Eames Consulting is active in recruiting for retail banking. It is working with a number of FTSE 100 Banking entities in sourcing risk and audit professionals. It says the requirements vary across the entire spectrum of risk (credit, operational, market, IT and business) at all levels with salaries ranging from £40,000 for an analyst or audit senior to £150,000 plus for a head of department. Eames director Matthew Jaquiss said: "Over the past decade risk assessment, quantification and management has become increasingly important in all industries across the world. This trend is particularly evident in the retail financial services industry as competing organisations strive to achieve increasingly ambitious profits whilst cutting costs and enhancing the quality of client choice and service; in turn increasing theirs and the client's risk of default. This has directly affected the Risk and Audit recruitment market, with demand now far outweighing supply."This demand is particularly felt within retail banking with the sector very buoyant. The need has had a positive effect on professionals employed in a risk and audit position with salaries increasing, employers working harder to keep employees happy and more opportunities opening up for career development across the financial services arena."Investment banksContinued business expansion has put further pressure on an already tight candidate pool in banking operations, says Morgan McKinley's annual salary survey. Most roles McKinley recruits for are in the £26,000 to £80,000 range but the Senior Operations division recruits for positions commanding much more.McKinley said: "It has been another healthy year within the banking operations market… There is demand across the board for senior level candidates with previous loans, reconciliations and project management exposure. However, those candidates with equity derivatives knowledge continue to be the most sought after."McKinley says that basic annual salaries for permanent staff within the sector have risen considerably due to "the ongoing war for exceptional candidates". Individuals across the board with specific product knowledge at the intermediate to senior level can expect a 15 to 18% increase in their basic salary when changing roles and candidates from a derivatives background can expect a 20% increase.Within the temporary market, McKinley said the market had been boosted by large financial organisations looking to temporary and contract candidates to fill permanent vacancies as well as to give both sides greater flexibility.Data from Reed confirms an upbeat pattern in the banking sector (see graphs).Phil Marks, managing director of Jonathan Wren, says: "Creative senior to junior financiers within areas such as financial engineering, leveraged/structured finance and private equity are earning salaries comparable with top bankers at the peak of the technology, media and telecoms boom." Marketplace Banking PDF

Job indices

Jobs created in April down on 2006

The Mandis/Adecco Job Creation Index (JCI) revealed that more than 28,000 jobs were created across the UK's 21 key industries in April 2007. However, this figure is down by 16% when compared to job creation in April 2006. It says the downturn is due to the fact that the previous two months have seen exceptional performances from a number of sectors. It found that the month's performance was driven again by the chemical, pharmaceutical, medical product and biotechnology group, which delivered a positive JCI of 706.Other top performing sectors in were consumer goods manufacturing, with a JCI of 254 and the energy and utilities sector which, after being one of last month's chasers, had a JCI of 209.April's poor performing sectors included finance and banking, which slipped to the bottom position, with a negative JCI of 96.Health and social care finished in the bottom three again, with a JCI of -90, while the printing and paper sector put in another disappointing performance, returning a JCI of -83.René Schuster, Adecco's chief executive UK & Ireland, says: "Although there has been a significant decrease in number of job creations in April 2007, this followed exceptional performances over the past two months and the same month last year."Philip Arnold, director of Mandis, adds: "The chemicals, pharmaceuticals, medical products and biotechnology sector again recorded an outstanding growth figure of 3,102 new job creations, mainly due to 3,000 new jobs being created in a science park in Newcastle."The second greatest increase in new job intentions was in the building and construction sector, which announced more than 2,000 planned new jobs, mainly due to a proposed golf resort development outside Aberdeen. The JCI figures are determined by comparing the number of jobs created within UK industrial sectors with the number of jobs created for the corresponding month in the previous year. The JCI figure shows individual industry performance, measured as a percentage above or below the number of jobs created from a year ago.

Fall in perm and temp placements

Members of the Forum of Professional Recruiters (FPR) have reported a slight fall in the number of both permanent and temporary placements in April.Secretary Leslie Waters told Recruiter: "Although half of participants saw a rise in permanent placements, overall they fell in April by 2% from March's figures, but were still 6% above April last year. This was the best April permanent performance since our records began in 2003.""And although 60% saw a rise in temporary placement, they fell overall in April by 1.4% from March, but were still 2% higher than April last year."Waters adds that April has seen a drop in temporary placement figures in recent years and is normally followed by a rise in May.The FPR is a trade association made up of 23 leading recruitment firms operation across the UK’s professional staffing. The rat race. No more lie-ins. No baked-beans-and-beer-based diets. You’ve got to decide how you’ll put that degree to good use… before you go into that one job interview that could shape the course of the rest of your entire life (no pressure!) you could do worse than to think of this article I found on the AGR http://www.agr.org.uk/ website:

’2007 is set to see a significant increase in the number of graduate job opportunities, but employers are still concerned that not enough candidates possess the right combination of skills.
Reflecting feedback from over 200 member organisations, the AGR Graduate Recruitment Survey 2007: Winter Review reveals that the number of graduate vacancies is predicted to rise by 15.1% this year – almost three times last year’s actual rise of 5.2%. (Growth is likely to be highest in the investment banking, accountancy and professional services sectors, with transport & logistics, construction, telecoms and the public sector also forecasting increases.)
And this growth looks set to provide graduate recruiters with further challenges, with more than 40% anticipating difficulty in filling all their positions this year. (Despite fierce competition for the best talent, fewer than 18% of graduate recruiters attribute any shortfall to uncompetitive starting salaries, as this year’s relatively modest average rise of 2.1% – the lowest for six years – would appear to confirm.)
Employers’ major concerns included the shortage of applicants with the right combination of soft skills (notably team-working, leadership and communication) and academic achievement; shortfalls in sectors where specific qualifications were required (such as engineering and construction); issues with specific geographical locations; and negative perceptions of certain industry sectors. The report stated that employers – including government departments and investment banks – felt there was an “inadequate supply of applicants of sufficient calibre.”’
www.canarywharfjobs.com

Valentine’s day is upon us again!

Valentine’s day is upon us again!

I thought I’d take a look at the lighter side of Valentine’s day, so here’s a few short V-Day-related rib-ticklers…

What do farmers give their wives on Valentine's Day? talking about job creation in Canary Wharf. Its a good sign!

By Ben Hall, Political Correspondent
Published: November 21 2006 22:07 Last updated: November 21 2006 22:07
The number of people working at Canary Wharf would more than double to 200,000 under revised government plans to redevelop the Thames Gateway.
Ruth Kelly, the communities secretary, will on Wednesday give further details of what is billed as the largest regeneration project in western Europe, predicting it could contribute £12bn a year to the UK economy if completed.

Ms Kelly will also respond to criticism that the project in east London lacks co-ordination and has produced soulless communities of poorly designed housing.
The government envisages a big expansion of Canary Wharf to extract greater economic benefits from the regeneration area, which extends for 40 miles east from London’s docklands along the Thames estuary to Southend in Essex and Sheerness in Kent.
The capital’s new financial district already houses 82,000 employees and the London headquarters of several international banks. Under the revised regeneration plan, that will swell to 200,000 by 2026.
Canary Wharf has been earmarked as one of four hubs of economic transformation, alongside the channel tunnel rail link interchanges at Ebbsfleet and Stratford, a cluster of ports including Tilbury and a new container terminal at Shellhaven, and the Olympics site in Stratford and the Lower Lea Valley.

The Thames Gateway aims to deliver 180,000 new jobs and 160,000 new homes within 20 years. However, with responsibility divided between more than 40 public authorities, it has been criticised for lacking strategic direction and oversight.
The government has responded by appointing a chief executive to oversee the project. Judith Armitt, a former chief executive of Medway council in Kent, one of the local authorities most affected, starts this week.

In her speech on Wednesday Ms Kelly will also acknowledge criticism of the poor quality of up to a quarter of the 30,000 new homes already built, admitting that “some of the previous development has not been up to scratch”.
She will urge developers and councils to “raise their game” to improve the design of homes, build more family homes rather than flats and provide better community amenities.
The updated plan envisages 16,500 new jobs at the container port at Shellhaven, although planning permission has not yet been granted, and 16,000 jobs created at a new commercial centre at Ebbsfleet Valley.

Meanwhile, redevelopment of the Olympics site could create up to 50,000 jobs in permanent sports facilities and a large retail centre.
“The long-term challenge of regenerating the Thames Gateway requires long-term commitment and focus from us and our partners,” Ms Kelly will say. “We are already seeing progress on the ground in the Gateway with new transport links, university campuses, jobs and homes; but for real success we must go further and faster.”
www.canarywharfjobs.com

Canary Wharf by Night

Came across this on YouTube, Pretty Amazing!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53xDh7I2zEg
www.canarywharfjobs.com

Canary Wharf - a booming economy

The Daily Record Always phone ahead to ask what the dress code is for the interview. You don't want to be wearing your smartest suit if your interviewers will be in low-slung jeans and designer t-shirts.

2. Look on the company website or ask for any literature they can send you about the job so that you can come across intelligently about what the organisation does.

3. First impressions count when it comes to getting a job. Make sure you have a strong handshake and smile when you meet the interviewers.

4. Around 90% of interviewers will ask about your strengths and weaknesses. So make sure you know what you would say yours are.

5. Keep your answers short and to the point. If you find yourself speaking for more than 30-40 seconds at a time, you are probably boring the interviewers.

6. On the other hand, never reply with one word answers such as ‘yes’ or ‘no’. Always elaborate and explain why you are saying yes or no.

7. Do say so if you don't understand a question. Ask the interviewers to rephrase it for you rather than try and answer the question regardless.

8. Find out about the company's competitors. Be prepared to talk about why you want to work for this company as opposed to its competitors in the industry.

9. Interviewers are often as interested in HOW you talk as WHAT you talk about. So concentrate on communicating your confidence and enthusiasm for the job.

10. It is no longer lawful to discriminate on grounds of age. There are a number of ways that this will effect both candidates, recruitment agencies and employers. These include:

Regulation 21 makes it unlawful for an employment agency to discriminate against a person in the way it provides, offers to provide, or refuses to provided its services.

In the same way that job advertisements may not specify a particular race of gender, age discrimination, including the use of such phrases such as "young and dynamic", "would suit someone who has just qualified" "mature", "highly experienced" "enthusiastic" or " minimum of ten years experience" is now also illegal.

The new legislation will not make it unlawful to ask for ages on application forms or in interview, however care should be taken to ensure discrimination does not arise from the use of the information.

Employers will no longer be able to impose compulsory retirement on those younger than 65, unless you can objectively justify it.

For more information read the full article
www.canarywharfjobs.com

Laughter in the workplace

It’s been well-documented that humor and laughter can reduce stress and provide many other benefits.

So when I came across this, I thought I'd share!

A company, feeling it was time for a shakeup, hires a new CEO. This new boss is determined to rid the company of all slackers. On a tour of the facilities, the CEO notices a guy leaning on a wall. The room is full of workers and he wants to let them know he means business! The CEO walks up to the guy and asks, "And how much money do you make a week?" Undaunted, the young fellow looks at him and replies, "I make $300.00 a week. Why?"The CEO then hands the guy $300 in cash and screams, "Here's a week's pay, now GET OUT and don't come back!"Feeling pretty good about his first firing, the CEO looks around the room and asks "Does anyone want to tell me what that goof-off did here?"With a sheepish grin, one of the other workers mutters, "Pizza delivery guy from Domino's."

Got any others to add? One recent survey showed that 52 per cent of City staff expect a big bonus this Christmas. Most of the bonuses are used to pay off mortgages or buy second homes and are a powerful driver of the housing market.

There has also been some controversy surrounding bonus payouts, with former Nomura trader posing lawsuit

The lawsuit from Piero Burragato, Nomura's London-based head of Italian business, is the third multi-million-pound claim levelled against the bank from its former City staff in as many weeks. Nomura already faces an £8m High Court claim from one of Burragato's former colleagues, Luis Marti-Sanchez, who says his annual bonus of £1.3m was far below what was promised, according to documents filed by his solicitor, Charles Ferguson.

www.canarywharfjobs.com

Career Advice and Resources

I just wanted to draw your attention to our Career Advice and Resources pages on CanaryWharfJobs.com.

We have put together lots of information about how to improve your CV, mastering your interview technique, employment law and much more!

Also checkout our Property, Lifestyle Their role within the business is more than one of just support; it is one of organisation and time management.

The PA / secretary’s role in the workplace is becoming more specialized, with a higher concentration on software and equipment knowledge. With a move towards technology, there has been a visibly reduced amount of administration duties involved in the role on a day to day basis, ultimately leading to a more varied job. Research conducted by London based recruitment agency Joslin Rowe confirmed that one of the biggest changes in the workplace has been the changing perception of the PA/Secretary.

According to the survey, PA’s/Secretaries felt that they were more respected within the organisation, as well as being more highly recognised.A large number of qualified and experienced PA’s and Secretaries are currently being sought by businesses across London.

The most 2005/2006 salary survey conducted by Financial Recruiter Joslin Rowe showed that Secretaries/PA's are currently being paid salaries from £13k up to £35K depending on experience and qualifications.
